Depending on the tide and other factors, Captain Michael will plan his day accordingly to get the most successful catch. Salmon fishing is usually a favorite for everyone aboard. King Salmon averages between 15-30 lbs. with the potential of catching lunkers, weighing more than 50 lbs...don't be too surprised to find it's a little more action than you'd expect. Hooking and reeling in a King is about 10 minutes of pure adrenaline. Silver Salmon also abound in Kodiak's waters. Silvers usually begin to show mid to late July. These torpedos are a wonderful addition to the salmon population, and are fished similar to the Kings. Kodiak Silvers are above average, weighing between 12-17 lbs. Another island favorite is Halibut. Get ready to hold on tight for these monsters. While the smaller fish in the 15-25 lb. class are the best for eating, you will frequently find fish from 50-100 lbs. and up to 300 lbs., which is not at all out of the ordinary. The State record is always being challenged, which sits at 459 lbs. as of today.
If variety is the spice of life, then Kodiak Island is blessed. Many guests like to add some grey cod or a ling cod to their cooler. Maybe you'd rather go after the rockfish family, starting with black sea bass. Extremely good to eat, black sea bass offers liberal limits up to 10 fish per day...many of these are boated as fast as you can drop your line in the water. Averaging about 5-6 lbs. they are an excellent fish to eat and readily handled by fisherman of all ages. The yelloweye rockfish is another bottom dweller that can be found in our waters. It takes years of experience to pinpoint the rocky underwater cliffs that hold these fish, and while they average about 15-30 lbs., they are also excellent for eating. They are often caught and found to be over 100 years old and are brilliant orange in color. Kodiak Island is known to be a world-class fishing destination for halibut and salmon. The unique underwater structure surrounding Kodiak Island is rich in abundance with candlefish, herring, capelin, and sand lance, creating the most productive waters for first class fishing.
